This easter egg is found beneath Minuteman settlement, The Castle and is only accessible to players who progress through the Minuteman story line.

    Description

After completing the mission Taking Independence, Ronnie Shaw, a veteran officer of the Minutemen who contacts the player at The Castle via Radio Freedom will take your character on a mission titled, Old Guns to unlock The Castles armory, which was blocked off during a great battle.

After fighting your way through the corridors and surviving numerous traps, the player will eventually come to a room where a deceased Minutemen general can be found next to a terminal and a case Amontillado wine. Across the room from the wine and terminal is also a large hole in the wall with a skeleton chained up inside.

    The Easter Egg

To many players the wine may seem like a special drink which can be used to up their stats, but Edgar Allen Poe fans will know different. This entire room is actually a reference to Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, The Cask of Amontillado, a story in which the narrator gets his rival drunk and entombs him alive inside of a brick wall.

And as an added bonus to this easter egg, during his years in the military Edgar Allen Poe was actually stationed at Fort Independence located on Castle Island, South Boston (our real life equivalent of The Castle) when he learned of a legend where several soldiers walled up the murderer of one of their comrades in a vault beneath the fort, effectively providing inspiration for one of Poe’s most famous works.
